GPS Trackers: Which one is right for you?

GPS Trackers for Business -VEHICLE TRACKING DEVICES

OBD II Plug-In GPS Tracker

An OBD II Plug-In GPS tracker is the fastest tracking device to get started with fleet tracking for your business. The tracking device uses the diagnostic port that is available in most vehicles produced in the United States since 1996. The OBD II plug in GPS device can be installed in just seconds when the port is found. The benefit, of course, is that there is no need for professional installation and swapping the tracker to a new vehicle is incredibly simple. OBD II trackers are ideal when you are informing your employees that the fleet is being tracked. Yet, they are still great as a theft recovery tool as they are not highly visible and can be concealed even further using an optional extension cable.

The OBD II tracking device can also give vehicle diagnostic code alerts which are sent back to the GPS tracking servers and then alert management. OBD II trackers utilize the same fleet tracking online and mobile applications for monitoring that all Rhino Fleet Tracking devices use.

OBD II Tracker – Technical Specifications

  • Dimensions: 46 x 43 x 28 mm
  • Power: 9 – 16 V
  • Mounting Options: Plug-n-play into OBDII Port
  • Communication Method: GSM/GPRS

Real Life Application

A customer providing metal work services utilizes OBD II trackers to track their fleet of trucks carrying welding equipment. On a typical work day, the office received notification that one of their trucks had been stolen. The fleet manager immediately accessed the Rhino Fleet Tracking dashboard application to pull up the map showing all of their company vehicles. The thieves pulled the OBD II plug-in tracker from the truck and tossed it outside. However, the fleet manager was able to provide police with the location where the tracking device last reported. This information was critical to police finding the stolen truck, as they found the truck not far from where the GPS tracking device had last located. Upon arrival to the scene, the thieves were stopped and minutes away from removing and taking off with the high priced welding equipment in another vehicle.

Installed Vehicle Tracker with GPS

Installed GPS Vehicle Trackers (we call them the VTI) are used just like OBD II trackers but are installed under the dashboard of a vehicle.  Installed Vehicle Trackers are ideal in situations where the fleet manager or fleet owner need to make tampering with the GPS tracking equipment a priority.  The GPS Vehicle trackers are installed by a professional (anyone capable of installing a car stereo is over-qualified!) using a power, ground, and ignition-based power wire.  The installation usually takes about 20-30 minutes and the vehicle tracker is active once it is connected.  Like the OBD II trackers, these GPS tracking devices are so accurate, you can know which side of a driveway your vehicle is parked on.  A sales consultant can help you determine if these are the best GPS trackers for you.

Advanced Vehicle Tracker with GPS

These GPS trackers are used for a few different applications.  Where advanced GPS tracking devices are required is where there is a need to monitor switches, PTO, or ancillary features of truck or vehicle.  For instance, a septic tank pump truck might require the fleet owner to know when the pump is started and stopped.

Other requirements for advanced GPS vehicle tracking devices are where ELD or dispatching is required. In these instances, a fleet might need to connect to a Garmin device or connect to an Android tablet or phone over Bluetooth to initiate ELD software for compliance reasons.

One of our customers operates dump trucks and utilizes the power take off for scheduling and verification. With this type of tracking, they are able to see where their trucks are and exactly when they have a free load, but to also verify that they are not deviating from the scheduled plans.

We also have a towing customer who uses these devices to ensure that the tows made match the fares they are billing. This helps keep their employees loyal by not towing any vehicles on the side and pocketing the cash.

GPS Trackers for Business – EQUIPMENT AND TRAILER TRACKERS

Battery-Powered GPS Trackers

Battery-Powered GPS devices are most commonly used in trailer tracking applications.  A battery-powered GPS tracker allows for easy installation and concealment with a very quick startup time and very little maintenance required.  The trailer trackers can be installed on the front or side of a trailer and will report on a schedule or based on an event (movement).

The battery-powered tracking devices are powered by off-the-shelf lithium ion batteries that can be replaced in the field very affordably.  Further, because these GPS tracking devices are weatherproof, they can be exposed to rain, dust, and snow without worry.

In the default scenario, these devices can be deployed for over 4 years without interruption.

Battery Powered GPS Trackers – Technical Specifications

  • Dimensions: 7.64″ x 2.88″ x 1.08″
  • Power: 2-3 year battery life at 1 message/day (4 AA batteries)
  • Mounting Options: Tape, Screw, Mounting Sled
  • Communication Method: GSM cellular network

Real Life Applications

About a year ago, a friend of one of our employees, who owns a landscaping crew, had his trailer full of landscaping equipment stolen.  With the zero-turn mower, push mowers, weed eaters, blowers, and trailer costs, he was out over $22,000.  For whatever reason, an insurance claim wasn’t an option for him.  Our employee had already told him about our GPS tracking device options, but he had put that off.  So, the new trailer and equipment were outfitted with battery-powered GPS tracking device.  A few weeks later, they were needed as his trailer was stolen again!  This time, he gave us a call, our support technician helped him in his conversations with the police and the tracking devices and service were able to lead the police to his hideout.  Funny enough, our customer’s first stolen trailer was in the same storage unit where the criminal planned to store this trailer and equipment!

Rechargeable GPS Trackers

Long Life Rechargeable GPS Tracker

Many trailer tracking applications can be aided by knowing when a truck tethers to a trailer and then being able to know where the trailer is when traveling.  The tethered GPS tracker for trailers is ideal for this application.  These devices are weatherproof and they wire into the lights or ABS of a trailer.  Thus, the fleet managers can know where and when a trailer is connected to a vehicle.  The GPS trackers can then be configured to report location when connected on a regular basis.

  • Dimensions: 4.4″ x 2.7″ x 1.6″
  • Power: Used to Recharge the Battery
  • Battery: 6600 mAh Rechargeable Battery
  • Communication Method: CDMA cellular network

Real Life Application
A manufacturer of wire, who ships large spools across the country, hires 3rd party drivers to take their trailer loads of wire across the country. Because the company does not own the trucks, they cannot easily track the trucks.  However, because they own the trailers and have the rechargeable tracking devices installed, the company can see when loads are picked up and is able to keep tabs on deliveries across the country when in route to their customers.

Weatherproof and Easily Concealed GPS Tracker

We call this device a 4550.  This device is ideal for equipment, ATV’s, zero-turn lawn mowers, generators, and all other types of equipment that have a battery but are not so large that placing a bulkier tracker would be problematic.  The tracking device is small enough that it can be installed on a motorcycle and easily concealed.  The battery is not as large or long lasting as the Long Life Rechargeable but it is long enough to report for multiple days without a recharge.  Further, it can report frequently when the vehicle is powered and in motion.

Real Life Application

One of our customers was in Arkansas when he received a call from one of his drivers attempting to recover a large tractor outside of Dallas. The driver did not find the tractor where it was supposed to be. Our customer quickly logged in on his laptop from Arkansas and obtained turn-by-turn direction for his driver and found the equipment right where the GPS tracking system indicated it would be. All of this was completed within an hour. Had GPS tracking not been on the equipment, the recovery might have taken days or possibly never have happened at all.

The other way that rental companies use the GPS tracking system for their equipment is to confirm that a 1-day rental is actually that. The scenario is that a customer rents a tractor for 1 day on a Friday. The renter claims that is the only day he will use it but that he cannot return the equipment until Monday as the rental company will be closed before he can return the equipment at the end of the day. In the past, the rental company would have to trust that the renter would honor his word and only use the equipment on Friday. Now, with the equipment tracking devices and system, the renting company can see what the actual usage of that equipment really is.

Solar Recharged GPS Tracker

The solar rechargeable GPS tracker is designed for trailer, container, and equipment use where there is a need for 10 years or a similar time of unattended tracking.  This tracking device operates very similar to both the rechargeable and the battery-only tracking devices in that it can be connected to sensors and external power but it doesn’t have to be.  The shape is actually designed to fit inside the grooves of a container.  Special Order Only

  • Max. Solar Charge Current: 150mA

Real Life Application
A customer of ours uses this solar powered GPS tracking device in a remote location in the Rocky Mountains. The equipment that this device is on is used to collect data and because of the remote location, the site is not frequently visited by the employees, so they don’t have to bother with changing any batteries. They rely heavily on the solar powered GPS tracker to not only ensure the pricey equipment is still where they left it, but to also use as a training device when deploying new employees up to the location. With this device, they can pinpoint exactly where the equipment is located.
